There are many reasons to visit Copan in the western region of Honduras, starting with the Main Archaeological Site including the Maya Sculpture Museum, which you can visit in a half day, or if you want to go a little more deeper you can also venture into the tunnels showing the temples the Maya built and buried in successive layers.

For a longer stay, you can also visit Las Sepulturas, a residential area just beside the main site. There are plenty of other choices such as the Macaw Mountain Bird Park, Copan Coffee Tour, Luna Jaguar Hot Springs, Copan Canpy Tour, Horse Back Riding, and many more activities related to the daily life in this quaint little town.

One of the main tourist attractions in mainland Honduras is the magnificent Maya Archaeological Site of Copán. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1980 by the UNESCO, Copan is arguably one of the greatest Maya city-states of the Classic period. The site is currently gaining popularity among scholars and mystics due to the notorious Maya Long Count Calendar milestone, as the end of the current time cycle, around the 23rd and 25th of December 2012, draws near. The Lenca Trail is a nice off-the-beaten-path route that includes interesting centuries old little towns with colonial churches and ethnic groups that still keep to their ancient customs.
